Sewing has today transcended to a passion than a profession among many people. Earlier it was considered the domain of women stitching their children’s or household items. Today various reasons abound, some want to give a unique stitch on their apparels whereas others learn for the regular repair work. Some take it as a hobby; others use it for minor mending while still others want to get that extra freaky stitch on their denim. But this brings the question as which is the best sewing machine for beginners.
Art of every form requires the artist to be equipped with the basics. So a beginner should look for machines that are easy to handle, safe and concentrate on simple stitches rather than complex embroideries and extra fittings you can’t even name. Local shops will give you leads on which are the best sewing machine for beginners.
Although initially you don’t have to be brand savvy, you will find good beginner sewing machine models from Singer, Brother or Kenmore available at Wal-Mart or Sears. Most shops will also give you a demo of the machine before your purchase. But make sure you are provided with a warranty card and a user manual unless you want to visit them for every new stitch you try. Before making your final decision make sure you try your hand at the machine. Money cannot always be a good judge, so don’t run behind the cheapest machines ending up with a whole lot of wrecked up screws and tools to handle on Your Own.
But this doesn’t mean you must have the advanced computerized machines which can also be too much of an expense and complication for a beginner. Also avoid the advanced computerized models or the ones with embroidery options because in the case of beginners they are good at confusing than teaching. Nowadays competition has brought sewing machines to fabric stores too to tap in the relative market.
Good fabric stores also sell machines and many of them give you the freedom to try them out before parting with your money. Important things to look out for are if you are able to get a straight stitch, zigzag, whether foot pressure is adjustable, stitch length flexibility and ease in working with button hole.
Acquaint yourself with simple stitches and abstain from trying complicated and designer styles at the beginning. Similarly first try simple things like a straight stitch, filling the bobbin, a zigzag, threading and some buttonholes. The knowledge of simple stitches further allows you to try out your creative streaks with fancy stitching on different materials.
Remember initial hiccups will teach you more than any other school so go ahead and take your first step by getting the right sewing machine for beginners.
